Middleburg Communities Makes Strategic Addition to its Research and Data Analytics Team, Hiring Mitchell Bollinger as Director of Research

VIENNA, Va. – August 02, 2022Middleburg Communities (“Middleburg”), a fully integrated multifamily development, investment, construction and management company operating in the southeastern and mid-Atlantic United States, today announced the strategic hiring of experienced financial and real estate professional Mitchell Bollinger as Director of Research. Bollinger, who will report to Chief Economist Brad Case, PhD, CFA, CAIA, will be responsible for further developing Middleburg’s data, analytics and research capabilities, and providing analytical support for acquisition, disposition and development opportunities.

Bollinger, who holds both the CFA and CAIA designations, has spent the past 20 years working for some of the real estate industry’s most respected research and analytics firms. He brings to Middleburg strong institutional knowledge of the financial markets and all aspects of real estate, including lending, asset management, research and performance evaluation.

“We are pleased to strengthen our research and data analytics team with the addition of Mitchell,” said Case. “Throughout his career, he has continued to produce high quality, data-driven research that has been instrumental in helping multiple real estate firms make more informed investment decisions and drive added value for their shareholders. Our data and analytics platform is already a key differentiator for our business, and adding Mitchell allows us to further enhance our capabilities and ensure we remain at the forefront of the industry.”

Bollinger joins Middleburg from Makov Processes International, where he served as a researcher and employed advanced analytical tools to evaluate fund performance, measure risk and construct optimal portfolios. Prior to this, he was head of research for Courtland Partners (~$65B AUM) where he performed investment research, due diligence, investment policy creation, strategic planning, manager selection, compliance monitoring and portfolio implementation. While at Courtland, he was tasked with producing research for Vanguard that examined the relationship between private real estate and publicly traded assets and addressed how to measure the risk of private real estate and include it in a portfolio of publicly traded assets.

“I’m thrilled to join Middleburg’s growing team and contribute to their best-in-class proprietary research capabilities,” said Bollinger. “I know firsthand how important new and available data is throughout the entitlement, development and acquisition process. I am excited to leverage my skillset alongside industry titans like Brad to help identify compelling value-add opportunities for the company to further cement our reputation as the industry leader in data analysis.”

Bollinger has also co-authored a research paper alongside University of Chicago professor Joseph Pagliari that examined the risk adjusted performance of core and non-core private real estate funds. The paper, titled Another Look at Private Real Estate Returns by Strategy, was published in the Journal of Portfolio Management’s Special Real Estate Issue, and its findings have been presented at the University of North Carolina Real Estate Research Symposium, the Institute for Private Capital’s Alternative Investment Conference, National Council of Real Estate Investment Fiduciaries’ (NCREIF) research and plan sponsor committees and the real estate program at the University of Oxford.

Bollinger earned a degree in Industrial Engineering from Virginia Tech and holds an MBA from Vanderbilt University.
